It was a groundbreaking weekend in the SF Bay Area for the USL W League, with the Oakland Soul and SF Glens women’s pre-professional team’s making their debut. On the men’s side, the USL League 2 also started its season with the Glens and Project 51O kicking off.
W League – Oakland Soul win
The Oakland Soul won their first game ever on the road with a 3-2 victory over Stockton Cargo.
Nayeli Diaz struck first for the Soul, with Ceci Gee putting the visitors up 2-0. Stockton’s Alexis Brewah got one back for the home side before Gee scored again before the half.
Stockton clawed back in the second half thanks to a strike from Haley Bostard, but the Soul held on and claimed the full three points.
W League – SF Glens cruise in opener
The San Francisco Glens impressed in their first game ever with a 7-0 victory over Academica SC.
Three first-half goals broke the game open for the Glens with Nádia Gomes, Kaylee Kim, and Maia Beltran scoring.
Then USA U-17 International Miri O’Donnell put the game to bed with a hat trick in seven minutes sandwiched around halftime.
Mexico U-17 International Vanessa Aguilar contributed two assists for the Glens.
League 2 – SF Glens defeat Academica
An early goal by Max Chretien was enough to see out the San Franciso Glens in their season opener against Academica 1-0.
Chretien scored in the 14th minute. Next up for the Glens is their return leg next weekend in Turlock.
Project 51O starts title defense with victory
Project 51O looked prepared to defend their title, outlasting the Davis Legacy 6-2.
Etsgar Cruz opened the scoring in the 8th minute. Then Davis Legacy’s Saul Tecle scored two to give Davis the lead heading into the break.
Kaden Standish’s goal in the 60th minute tied the game up for 51O. Saul Tecle took the lead for 51O three minutes later. They iced the game with a 90th-minute strike by Thomas Camier. Two goals from Luis Saldaña in extra time padded the final scoreline.
