In the most anticipated USL League 2 game of the season, the San Francisco Glens dominated San Francisco City from the opening tap to score a surprising 4-1 victory and climb to the top of the Southwest Division standings.
This year’s SF Derby, the first between the two teams since 2019, was unusual. SF City hosted the game at Boxer Stadium. Before this season, the Glens called Boxer their home field but moving to Skyline College this year while waiting to complete their Treasure Island complex.
For the Glens, perhaps being back at Boxer fueled them to an early lead when Dominic Valdivia scored in the second minute.
SF City seemed to right the ship, but two goals from the Glens’ Max Chrétien and Diego Grande burst the game wide open in the 34th and 36th minutes.
Adrian Medina struck for the Glens’ fourth goal in the 56th minute to put any doubt of a comeback to bed. City’s Cekala scored a consolation goal in the 59th minute for the final 4-1 scoreline.
With the victory, the SF Glens moved into first place in the USL League 2 Southwest Division, a point ahead of the Southern California Seahorses and Project 51O.
This Friday, the SF Glens head down to Southern California to take on the Ventura County Fusion at Ventura College, while SF City heads to the Central Valley looking to rebound against the Davis Legacy.
Project 51O lose second in a row
After an undefeated start of the season Project 51O fell for their second game in a row to the Southern California Seahorses at Ohlone College on Sunday.
Thirty seconds into the game 51O got off to a dream start when Luis Saldana got onto the end of a cross to head home the goal.
A few minutes later, the Seahorses were called for a penalty in the box that Gabriel Bracken Serra converted for the 2-0 lead.
However, the SoCal visitors were able to claw back a goal before the break and then scored a brace in the second half to send the Project to their second consecutive defeat.
Both teams are tied for second place in the Southwest Division. Project 51O are off before traveling across the Bay to take on SF City on June 16.
