The San Jose Earthquakes scored three goals on the road against the Houston Dynamo. Unfortunately, they conceded four and remain winless this season.
“It’s a difficult moment for us. I’m not going to lie to you; there’s a lot for us to think about right now,” said Quakes defender Tommy Thompson. “There’s a lot for us to reevaluate.”
Houston earned the early lead in the 8th minute behind a Sebastian Ferreira goal.
Quakes forward Jeremy Ebobisse scored two quick goals in the 25th and 28th minutes to give the visitors the surprising lead over Houston. However, San Jose could not hold the lead until the halftime break conceding a Darwin Quintero goal in the 43rd minute.
“There were a lot of good moments, but it feels like a refrain at this point to continue to sync the positivity in some difficult results,” said Ebobisse after the game. “Being in a position to see out the first half up 2-1 is definitely a positive, but then not being able to close out those final minutes put us a little on the back foot in the second half. Disappointingly, there were some set-piece goals we conceded. If we can put together bit by bit of the positivity in which there we a lot of positives tonight, then results should start coming our way. Although it’s tough right now, I firmly believe that.”
The Dynamo took control of the game with two more goals in the 58th and 68th minutes.
Tommy Thompson scored in the 77th minute to inch the Quakes back into the game. But they were not able to get the equalizing goal.
“Yeah, it’s a difficult loss. Any time you concede four goals, you’re not going to be happy about it,” Thompson noted. “It’s been a difficult start to the season. There’s no hiding from that. This is not how we planned it. It’s just something that we’re going to have to correct. We’re going to have to correct it going into the week, and we’re going to have to clean up the mistakes we made. The good news is we’re going back to San Jose; we’ll be playing at home, so we’ve got to focus on turning things around there.”
San Jose’s next game is Saturday, April 16th, at PayPal Park vs. Nashville SC. The kickoff is at 12:30 pm PDT.
