NPSL Golden Gate starts season

The NPSL Golden Gate Division will play a shortened season this year.

Eight NPSL Golden Gate Division teams will take to the pitch for their first competitive games in over fifteen months this weekend.

The competition will include Bay Area sides El Farolito, Napa Valley 1839, Sonoma County Sol, Oakland Stompers, and Contra Costa FC. Other Northern California teams include FC Davis, Sacramento Gold, and Academica from Turlock.

“The NPSL and the Golden Gate Conference are pleased to announce that they will release a formal schedule for 2021, operating under the NPSL brand,” in a press release. “However, due to the delayed and uncertain timing of the opening of Northern California, the conference will return to play with a season commencing in June and ending in August.”

Because the Golden Gate Division is playing on a different schedule from the rest of the NPSL teams nationwide, the teams will not be taking part in the league’s postseason. Contra Costa is the new team among the group, having moved up from the UPSL earlier this year.

This weekend’s matchups: (all games Saturday, June 5)

Contra Costa FC vs. El Farolito at Crocker Amazon (San Francisco) – 12 pm
Sacramento Gold FC vs. Oakland Stompers at Raimondi Park (Oakland) – 6 pm
FC Davis vs. Napa Valley 1839 at Davis Stadium (Napa) – 7 pm
Academica vs. Sonoma County Sol FC at Petaluma Community Sports Fields (Petaluma) – 7 pm
