NPSL: El Farolito, Napa Valley win

NPSL Golden Gate Division

In this season’s edition of the Causeway Clasico, previously unbeaten FC Davis lost at home to the Sacramento Gold by a score of 3-1. Sacramento’s veteran striker Matt Wiesenfarth opened the scoring in the 14th minute, tapping home a teammate’s soft shot attempt with authority. Two minutes later, Sacramento State’s Titus Washington equalized for Davis after a teammate stole the ball in the midfield and Washington used his speed to set up a breakaway that left the Gold’s goalkeeper no chance. Wiesenfarth completed the brace in the 38th minute, pouncing on a loose ball in the box after a teammate headed down a long throw-in. The Gold closed out the scoring in the 54th minute, as Steven Wright’s header off of a corner kick nestled inside the far post. Davis continued to attack, but came up empty; a shot in the 60th minute was cleared off the line by a Sacramento defender and Justin Wright’s shot in the 65th minute went just wide.

El Farolito earned a road win over Sonoma County Sol FC as Gabriel Arias scored the only goal in the match in the 83rd minute. Three minutes later, Sonoma’s Shawn Verdote earned his second yellow card and was ejected. Farolito’s goalkeeper Jonathan Barona earned his first clean sheet of the season.

Napa Valley 1839 FC beat Contra Costa FC 3-2 in a seesaw battle on Fan Appreciation Night at Mt. Diablo High School in Concord. Contra Costa’s Eliezer Paul Gindiri opened the scoring in the 21st minute, but Napa’s Dario Pavon answered in the 32nd minute to leave the clubs knotted up at halftime. Francisco Mendoza gave Napa the lead in the 55th minute and Pavon completed his brace with a 70th-minute goal. Contra Costa’s Justin Wolfe answered in the 81st minute, but he and his teammates were unable to earn an equalizer.

Academica SC overwhelmed the Oakland Stompers 5-1 in Turlock. Academica took control of the match in the first half, with goals by Andres Velasquez (8th minute) and Cody Golbad (35th minute). They put the match away early in the second half, with goals by Bobby Ceja (51st minute), Diego Hernandez (58th minute), and Gabriel Monteiro (73rd minute). Oakland’s Dean Hakim scored a consolation goal in the 84th minute.

With three matches left in this abbreviated season, the top four teams in the table have identical records of three wins and one loss: Academica, Davis, El Farolito, and Sacramento. The clubs return to action beginning on July 10, after taking a week off for the Fourth of July holiday.
