After batting the Colorado Rapids to a scoreless draw, the San Jose Earthquakes earned four points in two road games to return home in fifth place in the MLS Western Conference.
“If you look at the body of work over the two away games, four points and two shutouts in two games, I would say it’s positive,” said Quakes head coach Luchi Gonzalez after the game.
Saturday night’s match was a game of missed opportunities for both sides. Colorado’s Moise Bombito was shown a red card after his second yellow card in the 51st minute.
San Jose’s Benji Kikanović, Jeremy Ebobisse, and Carlos Akapo all had reasonable attempts on target but could not find the net.
The Rapids did earn a penalty kick in the 70th minute, but Quakes keeper Daniel was able to stop the shot.
“But collectively, the team put a great effort, mentality, and grit to defend and to earn points,” noted Gonzalez. “In reflection, I think it’s positive. We’ll grab that, and now we get to go home and play a really good Philadelphia team and try to earn maximum points.”
San Jose returns home to PayPal Park to take on the Philadelphia Union on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
