Chris Wondolowski added to his MLS all-time goal total scoring a second-half goal as the Quakes defeated visiting Austin FC 4-0.
Chofis opened the scoring for San Jose in the 46th minute. Benji Kikanovic tallied the Quakes’ second goal in the 53rd minute, thanks to an assist from Jeremy Ebobisse.
Chris Wondolowski scored in the 59th minute to give San Jose a nice cushion, and Carlos Fierro finished off the scoring in the 85th minute off a feed from Cristian Espinoza.
“I think we played a great game,” said Earthquakes head coach Matias Almeyda after the game. “I asked them to play for honor, and they did that.”
“Matias Almeyda has always told us to play with love, passion, and honor. I think that’s what we showed tonight,” added Quakes goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski. “We played for each other, with each other as a team.”
Wondo was happy to get his 169th league goal in a convincing victory for the Earthquakes.
“To have this breakout game at home was very satisfying, very nice,” said Wondo. “For myself, I grab joy from that, and for myself, it’s a bit of a relief. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it hit the back of the net, so to do that was special as well.”
San Jose sits in 10th place, seven points behind Vancouver, who holds the final playoff spot in the Western Division. The Quakes have a chance to pull within four points on Saturday when they host the Whitecaps at PayPal park at 7 pm.
