After helping the Oakland Roots defeat LA Galaxy II, defender Max Ornstil earned an individual honor when his game-tying goal was voted USL goal of the week.
IIn the 25th minute, the Oakland native scored off a broken Roots corner kick. The ball was cleared to the top of the box, but it lined up perfectly for Max Ornstil. He rocketed his long-range shot past Galaxy keeper Justin vom Steeg and into the net.
Teammates mobbed Ornstil while the Oakland native savored the moment kissing his Roots crest.
Ornstil’s goal started the comeback that eventually earned the Roots a 2-1 victory over LA.
His goal beat out four other competitors, Charlotte’s Marcelo Palomino, Pittsburgh’s Kenardo Forbes, Sacrament’s Cameron Iwasa, and Birmingham’s Neco Brett.
In celebration of his award, Ornstil posted on Instagram: “Appreciate all those that voted!! More to come.”
Johnny Rodriguez returns to Roots lineup
An important figure from the Roots 2020 NISA side finally made his long-awaited debut against New Mexico United for Oakland.
After being injured in the pre-season, Johnny Rodriguez made his first appearance of the year when he was subbed into the game in the 55th minute.
In a video posted on the Roots Twitter account, captain Wal Fall congratulated Rodriguez on rehabbing from an upper extremity injury he suffered in the pre-season and working his way back onto the team and gave him a soccer ball signed by all the players.
“it’s been a long road to be here, but I’m happy to be here,” Rodriguez said.
