The Oakland Roots and Austin Bold faced off in a defensive struggle which led to a scoreless draw at Las Positas College in Livermore.
The Roots were repeatedly tested by Austin Bold and outshot 16-3 for the game.
“I think tonight even though they had shots, I don’t think they were dangerous, which is a big positive for us,” said Roots head coach Jordan Ferrell after the game.
The visitors had the first good chance eleven minutes in that went just wide. Roots keeper Zeus Delapaz made a diving save in the 34th minute.
Just before the half defender Tarek Morad made a diving save in the box to keep in scoreless at the break.
In the second half, Austin also had the best of the chances. Delapaz almost gave a ball away and was forced to make another save early in the 47th minute.
The Bold had one more good chance in the 85th minute when they failed to convert on a cross.
The Roots thought they may get a late penalty kick in extra time when a player was taken down in the box, but play was waved on.
With the result, Delapaz earned his first scoreless result of the year.
“Nothing better than a clean sheet,” he said after the game. “That’s what you want as a goalkeeper; you just don’t want to concede goals. We wanted to win games too, but we didn’t score unfortunately.”
Oakland’s game against Austin was their first home game of the season and played without fans after their first game on June 19 was delayed due to poor field conditions.
“We are all disappointed we could not kick off at home with them,” explained Ferrell. “I think we missed their energy tonight for sure, but we plan to be back on July 10th in front of them and put on a good performance.”
The Roots returns to the road for their next match Wed. June 30 at 7:30 pm against San Diego Loyal.
