A day before playing their biggest home game of the year, the San Jose Earthquakes acquired Brazilian defender Nathan Cardoso from Swiss club FC Zurich to help shore up their defense.
Like many Brazilian soccer players, Cardoso is known simply by his first name: Nathan. He came up in the Palmeiras development academy in Brazil and was loaned out to several teams in Brazil and Switzerland before being permanently signed by FC Zurich in 2019. In sixty-three games, the center back has scored one goal and tallied three assists. He also featured on Brazil’s U-20 national team.
“Reinforcing our defense was a priority and we are excited to add Nathan to our roster as we approach a dense schedule with more than two-thirds of the regular season still to play,” said Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli. “We believe Nathan’s age and skillset complements the qualities we have in our back line. We really like his athleticism and aerial game as well as the experience he accumulated both in Brazil and Switzerland. We would like to thank Nathan, his brother, Victor, and FC Zurich for their efforts to finalize his transfer to San Jose ahead of the summer window.”
The Quakes signed Nathan to a three-year contract with a club option for 2024.
San Jose will face off against their rivals the Los Angeles Galaxy in the California Classico on Saturday, June 26. Kickoff is 7 pm.
