After a long international break, the San Jose Earthquakes jump back into MLS action this weekend taking on Austin FC as they open up their brand new stadium.
This will be the first-ever matchup between the two teams.
“It gives us a lot of pleasure and I personally have a lot of admiration for them,” Quakes head coach Matias Almeyda noted about the first-year MLS side. “I think they quickly formed a good team with very good players. From what we’ve seen, the stadium looks nice.”
“The fact that they will be opening their stadium against us does not change our style of play,” explained Earthquakes midfielder Cristian Espinoza. “We have to play a great game because we have a great opponent in front of us, and we have to do things right in order to earn a win on the road.”
Coming back into the fold for the Quakes is Jackson Yuell who had a successful stint with the US Men’s National Team including winning the CONCACAF Nations League championship.
“It was a really special trip. It was really good to be with the guys again and of course win the tournament,” said Yuell. “For myself, I’m really pleased with how it went and I’m looking forward to being back here in San Jose and bringing what I saw there back here.”
The kickoff for the San Jose vs. Austin game is 6 pm PDT on Saturday and can be viewed nationally on UniMás or on radio at KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.
