Despite an early lead, the San Jose Earthquakes (3-4-0) lost their third game in a row over the weekend to Sporting Kansas City 3-1.
“It’s really frustrating for us,” said Quakes defender Tommy Thompson after the game. “After starting the season so well, to drop three games at home is unacceptable. It feels like we’re just coming up short.”
Chofis staked the Quakes to an early lead in the fifth minute after a corner kick from Cristian Espinoza.
Shortly after Sporting Kansas City’s Alan Pulido was able to equalize. Pulido pulled SKC ahead in the 60th minute and Kansas City added an insurance goal in the 75th minute.
The loss dropped San Jose to 7th in the Western Conference.
“Over the last three weeks, we were scoring three goals, four goals and two goals. That will return,” said head coach Matias Almeyda. “We had an excellent start but after these losses, we need to quickly make changes.”
“Our locker room isn’t getting our heads down,” Thompson added. “We’re not down on ourselves at all. We’re just frustrated that we didn’t execute in the way that we wanted to. But I think next weekend is the perfect opportunity to bounce back in the derby game in LA.”
Yueill called up to US Men’s National Team
San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Jackson Yueill was called up to the United States Men’s National Team roster ahead of the Concacaf Nations League Final Four contest in early June.
They will play Honduras on June 3, and then face off against the winner of the two other semifinalists, Mexico or Costa Rica, on June 6.
Yueill has featured for the USMNT nine times in the past and was captain of the USA’s U-23 squad that attempted to qualify for this summer’s Olympics in Japan.
