Tough news for Bay Area Soccer fans: Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, USL League Two announced that the Southwest Division will forgo its 2021 season, leaving San Francisco City, San Francisco Glens, and Project 51O (the development squad for Oakland Roots) without a league to play in this summer.
“After careful consideration around the impacts of COVID-19, the Southwest Division has chosen to forgo the 2021 season with the utmost support from the United Soccer League,” said Joel Nash, Vice President of USL League Two. “With COVID-related challenges such as venue availability, local health statistics, and travel mandates, the Southwest Division does not see a safe path to play for the 2021 season and therefore has chosen to take a step back to keep all players, coaches, and staff safe during this time.”
“We fully expect to see the return of the Southwest Division for the 2022 season, and we look forward to welcoming them back onto the pitch,” he added.
Besides the Glens, City, and Project 51O, the Southwest Division is comprised of the Santa Cruz Breakers and in Southern California FC Golden State Force, Pro Southern California Seahorses, and Ventura County Fusion.
