After conceding the first goal, the San Francisco Deltas responded with two unanswered to defeat the Burlingame Dragons in a second round US Open Cup game 2-1 at Cagan Stadium in Palo Alto.
The USL-PDL side Dragons weathered an early onslaught of possession from the Deltas and ended up having the better of the chances to score in the first half. San Franciso goalkeeper Steward Ceus made two saves before Burlingame’s Jamael Cox scored a goal in the 29th minute.
Just before the half, the Deltas got the equalizer when Reiner Ferreira headed in a Kyle Bekker free kick. Just after subbing in the second half, Tommy Heinemann scored in the 63rd-minute for the final score.

“Burlingame created problems the first thirty minutes. They have to be proud of themselves today,” said head coach Marc Dos Santos. “It took the best out of us to win this game. We knew it would be difficult and it took a lot of our energy to come back and win.”
The Deltas rested several regulars for the match. Steward Ceus, Patrick Hopkins, Maxim Tissot, Greg Jordan, and Andrew Lubahn all made their first start for San Francisco.
San Francisco faces a difficult road ahead in cup play. They advance to play USL side Phoenix Rising FC in Phoenix for the Third round of the US Open Cup on Wednesday, May 31st. The team features Didier Drogba, Omar Bravo, and Sean Wright-Phillips. If the Deltas win that game they will next face off against MLS side San Jose at Avaya Stadium on June 14th.
The Deltas resume NASL league play this Friday night when they host the Jacksonville Armada at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco at 7:30 pm.
