Former New York Cosmos midfielder Danny Szetela is in talks to sign with the San Francisco Deltas, according to a report from the website Empire of Soccer.
Szetela was once a rising star for the US Soccer national team. He played regularly for the USA’s U-17 and U-20 teams. In 2004, he was signed by the MLS’s Columbus Crew as a 17-year-old but never became a regular for the squad. After playing soccer in Europe for a few seasons, he returned to MLS in 2010. He suffered a severe knee injury in the MLS pre-season which kept him out of the sport for the next few years. He joined the NASL’s Cosmos after a tryout for its inaugural campaign in 2013.
In 83 appearances for the team, he recorded 5 goals. Szetela is available after New York released all of its players and has indicated it will not play next year in the league.
In an interview last week, Szetela told BigAppleSoccer.com, “I’m a little upset with what happened with the Cosmos. It’s part of life. I’m hoping to finalize with a club hopefully today or tomorrow.”
If Szetela joins the Deltas, he would be the fourth confirmed signing for the NASL squad which will debut in 2017. Last week the team announced the signings of Nana Attakora, Jackson Henrique Gonçalves Pereira, and Romuald Peiser.
