The Bay Area’s new professional soccer team has a name: the San Francisco Deltas. The self-billed “soccer startup” Bay Area Pro Soccer announced the name via social media on Sunday morning before organizing a march with the team’s supporters outside Super Bowl City and along Market Street in San Francisco.
The Deltas are expected to start play in 2017 in the NASL, the North American Soccer League, which is the second division of soccer in the United States. They would be the first west coast team for the league, which is also rumored to be expanding to Orange County or San Diego.
The self-billed “soccer startup,” plans to have technology play a large role for the team, including using AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology to allow dynamic seating for the team’s home games. The team has not announced what stadium it will call home, but with “SF” featuring prominently in the logo it is believed the team prefers to play in the city of San Francisco.
Photos and videos of the march, which featured freestyle soccer players and a Brazilian marching band, were posted on Twitter and Instagram.
Currently, the only professional soccer team in the Bay Area is the San Jose Earthquakes who play in MLS, the top level of professional soccer in the United States. San Francisco has two amateur soccer teams, San Francisco City FC, and Stompers FC. SF City FC will be playing in the USL PDL this upcoming season, top amateur soccer league in the United States, and plan to bring a professional soccer team to San Francisco as well.
San Francisco has had a checkered history of professional soccer. The city’s last team, the second division California Victory, survived only one season in 2007. The San Francisco Seals also ran a minor league soccer team in San Francisco from 1992-1999.
